Little Sahara Opens Bookings as Three States Enter Winter School Holidays

VIVONNE BAY, South Australia, May 28, 2026 — Little Sahara Adventure Centre, Kangaroo Island’s TripAdvisor #1-ranked experience in Australia and eight-time consecutive Travellers’ Choice Award recipient, has confirmed its full winter activity program is open for bookings as meteorological winter begins on 1 June 2026. School holiday periods across Victoria (26 June – 13 July), South Australia (4–19 July), and New South Wales (6–17 July) create an overlapping family travel window across late June and July, with all three states sharing a common holiday period from 6 to 13 July.

“Winter is genuinely one of the best times to visit the dunes,” said Brenton Davis, Director, Little Sahara Adventure Centre. “The light is different, the crowds are smaller, and the cooler temperatures make the more active tours more comfortable. For families travelling from the mainland during school holidays, the experience is completely different to a summer visit.”

Extended operating hours of 9am to 5pm apply across all school holiday periods, reverting to the standard winter hours of 10am to 4pm outside holiday windows. The centre operates year-round and is closed only on Christmas Day.

Five Activity Formats Across Dune, Bushland, and Coast

The winter program covers five distinct activity formats suited to different ages, fitness levels, and group sizes. Guided buggy tours remain the flagship experience, taking visitors in Yamaha Viking UTVs across the dune system, through Eleanor River bushland, and to coastal lookout points that are otherwise inaccessible on foot. Wild koala sightings are guaranteed on every buggy tour, with guides providing commentary on the island’s ecology and landscape throughout.

Electric fat bike tours use motor-assisted, wide-tyre bikes suited to mixed fitness levels, covering dune and bush terrain at a pace guided by rider confidence. The format is accessible to a broad age range including older visitors and those who want an active outdoor experience without high physical exertion.

Guided koala walking tours take a slower pace through native bushland, focusing on wildlife observation and native flora identification. Sandboarding and tobogganing hire provides a self-directed experience across dune slopes of varying steepness, with terrain options for first-time and returning visitors. No prior experience is required. Evening tours are available for visitors wanting to experience the dunes and surrounding landscape outside standard daylight hours.

Multi-Award Credentials Across Three Decades of Operation

Little Sahara Adventure Centre has operated from Vivonne Bay since 2007 under the direction of Brenton Davis. The centre holds Advanced Eco Certification through Ecotourism Australia and accreditation from the South Australian Tourism Commission. Industry recognitions include Gold Medals for Tourism in 2013, 2014, and 2015, the Best Adventure Tourism Business in South Australia award, consecutive TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence, and the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice #1 experience in Australia ranking.

The dune system at Little Sahara sits on the south coast of Kangaroo Island within close reach of remote Southern Ocean beaches and coastal headlands. The inland formation features shifting ridgelines, steep dune faces, and open sand bowls surrounded by native scrub, compressing multiple terrain types into a compact area accessible from a single base at Vivonne Bay.

All bookings and equipment hire are available through littlesahara.com.au. With the three-state school holiday window representing the largest family travel opportunity of the winter season, early booking is recommended for guided tours during the peak overlap period of 6 to 13 July.
